Midland earned its moniker for being the midway point between Fort Worth and El Paso, TX, on the Texas and Pacific Railroad. It was founded in 1881 when cattle shipping was the biggest business in town. In 1923 after oil was discovered in the area, the town significantly changed and transformed into the administrative hub of the Permian Basin oil business. Midland is one of the biggest success stories of the oil boom in the 20th century. It was a modest town that turned into an oasis of wealth in the middle of West Texas.
